Remove Grass for Vegetable Beds

Right. So are we looking to remove a considerable portion of grass lawn at an existing rental. We have plans for a drought tolerant landscape but found a small business in the Los Angeles area named Farmscape that installs and maintains vegetable beds.

This option is smart. They remove your grass lawn, install raised beds and maintain a garden that produces vegetables. If your tenants don't want the harvest (really?) they can donate it. The garden beds are provided with low-water drip irrigation and maintained without pesticides or fertilizers.

To recap, we would reduce water use and maintenance, provide an aesthetically pleasing and unique component to our multifamily rentals and generate food for tenants or the needy. Will the monthly cost be greater than our existing lawn maintenance? We'll find out and let you know, but the downer is that this company's service area does not include our rental location.

Instead, we are considering incorporating raised beds into the new drought tolerant landscape that will replace the grass lawn. Tenants will be encouraged to grow and tend their own vegetables. If interest declines we'll fill them full of wildflowers. So much cooler than grass.
